Kristine Nystrom, LPC

Kristine Nystrom, LPCKristine Nystrom joined Larry and Doug at The DBT Clinic in 2015.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Oregon and Washington, and has worked in community mental health, private practice, and corrections.  She completed her Masters in Counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM.

Kristine received intensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy training under Dr. Alan Fruzitti. Kristine was part of a DBT team at Columbia River Mental Health in Vancouver, WA, providing individual and group therapy.  She has often seen the profound healing power that DBT can have on individual’s lives.

In addition to DBT, Kristine also recently became intensively trained in Radically Open (RO) by it’s founder, Dr. Thomas Lynch.  An offshoot of DBT, RO is an evidenced based treatment for those that often feel disconnected from others and tend to push down emotions until they explode.  She is currently the only clinician at The DBT Clinic that offers RO, both individual and in group treatment, and is one of only a handful of clinicians in the Portland Metro area.

Kristine’s style of treatment is also trauma-informed.  She has received training in treatment of trauma through the Sensorimotor Psychothearpy Institute in Boulder, CO.  Trauma, and other painful life experiences, don’t just impact our mind.  Because of this the Sensorimotor approach involves mindful awareness of the whole being (mind, body, and spirit) in the healing of trauma.  When working with trauma, Sensorimotor techniques dovetail nicely with both DBT and RO because they are all mindfulness based modalities.

Above all, Kristine’s approach to therapy is collaborative, holistic, strengths-based, and non-judgmental.  She is passionate about helping her clients discover their own awesome beauty, wisdom, and strength no matter who they are, and what they have experienced in their lives.

When not in the office, Kristine enjoys exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest through hiking, backpacking, and riding her bike.  She also loves photography, singing, and writing.
